For many years, Sanibel shell enthusiast dreamed of establishing a museum dedicated entirely to shells and mollusks and their importance to the environment. After years of working together, shell collectors, shell craftsmen, shell club members and the world renowned malacologist R. Tucker Abbot, in 1988/89 the City of Sanibel declared The Shell Museum an educational institution.

The non-profit Bailey-Mathews Shell Museum features more than 30 exhibits of mollusks from around the world; with exhibits devoted to shells in art and history, shell habitat, rare specimens, fossil shells, common Southwest Florida shell, and more.

Being the only one of its kind in the country and the second in the world, The Bailey-Mathews Shell Museum features hands on play area for children, displays, games, and a tank with indigenous mollusks. Kids are also welcome to explore the museum, with a scavenger hunt game, and they are rewarded after finding various shells with a special price to take home.

The museum also showcase two educational videos and several events and activities during museum hours and after hours, like Marine Naturalist Adventure presenting ecological expeditions, together with Captiva cruises; Lighthouse Evening Beach Walks, to explore the beach near Sanibel Lighthouse during low tide with a Marine Naturalist, Shell and Sunset photo class with award winner photographers, and Family Fun Crafts with local artists, for guests of all ages, that teaches how to turn shelling treasures into unique pieces of art.

Durante muchos años, entusiastas de conchas de mar de Sanibel soñaban con crear un museo dedicado íntegramente a conchas y moluscos y su importancia para el medio ambiente. 

Después de años de trabajo conjunto, los coleccionistas de conchas, artesanos, miembros del club de concha y el mundialmente conocida malacólogo R. Tucker Abad, lograron en 1988-89 que la ciudad de Sanibel declarara El Museo de Conchas como una institución educativa.

El  Museo de Conchas de Mar Bailey-Matthews cuenta con más de 30 exposiciones de moluscos de todo el mundo; con exposiciones dedicadas a las conchas en el arte y la historia, su  hábitat, los especímenes raros, conchas fósiles, conchas del suroeste de la  Florida, y mucho más.

Siendo el único de su tipo en el país y el segundo en el mundo, El Museo de las Conchas Bailey-Mathews cuenta con zona de juegos para niños, exhibiciones, y un tanque con moluscos indígenas. Los niños también están invitados a explorar el museo, con un juego de búsqueda del tesoro, y ​​después de encontrar varias conchas y moluscos en exposición cada participante recibe un especial premio para llevar a casa.
